Bridgette leaned down over her small coffee mug, blowing on the liquid as hot steam rushed past her face. She wrinkled her nose, feeling the dampness it left on her. Setting down the cup, she pulled down the sleeve of her shirt, rubbing it lightly at the wet area. She sniffed a bit, before glancing up at the rest of the shop.
It was a busy morning, and the coffee shop was packed. Chatter could be heard from all corners, and she vaguely made out snippets of conversation here and there. To some this might be distracting, but it calmed her. She enjoyed the background noise that made this place feel more public. Silence would have made her uncomfortable.
More to the point, it seemed that all the seats in the establishment were taken, save for a few here and there. But none of those seats were at a table of their own; all were already accompanied by a person. A quick count and she discovered that there were 3 seats free.
The first, was at a table toward the back, in the corner, with a scruffy boy sitting at it. His caramel-colored hair was disheveled and he seemed to be half asleep, and what looked to be hours-cold coffee of some kind sitting in front of him. The open seat in question, however, happened to be occupied by his feet.
The second was only a few tables away, with a petite girl sitting at it. She was reading a book, occasionally taking a hand away from the binding to turn a page, or take a sip of some kind of beverage she couldn't quite make out. But, soon enough, she was accompanied by another girl, this one taller, more athletic looking, and the first girl put her book down and started chatting with her.
And last, but certainly not least, was the third chair. Sitting square in front of Bridgette. And, taking the state of the only other free seat, it seemed to be the only choice for a stranger to sit. Joy.
